Weekend League Action

The only ones with a smile on their face in German league action were the players of SC Freiburg. They won a key game against 1.FC Saabrücken which made them cut the deficit to the rescuing spot 10 – occupied by today’s opponent - to just three points. A 1-0 win scored with the half time buzzer on a directly converted corner kick secured the points for the South Germans. Kelly Parker played full 90 minutes, Mele French played 82 mins while Michelle Wenino did not see action.

Emily Zurrer and SG Essen-Schönebeck got downed by Turbine Potsdam, one of the best teams worldwide, today. The pressure of Germany’s new #1 in the standings was too high, Potsdam returned home with a 5-1 win. Essen even scored the lead but already until halftime the guests rallied away and led 3-1.

Tennis Borussia Berlin’s slump continued as they lost their battle against FF USV Jena 0:3. Short before halftime Jena scored the lead and clinched the win with 15 minutes left to go by a penalty kick, before scoring the final goal in stoppage time. With Kat Tarr playing full 90, it was the league debut for Amanda Feigt who played 83 minutes in her first game in Germany after being injured before.

In 2. Bundesliga TSV Crailsheim suffered a 1-3 road loss at league leaders Bayer Leverkusen. The American defense Allison Scurich and Jeannette Dyer had to be changed due to a tonsil surgery of latter one. In a game that could have sent Crailsheim into the promotion race with a win, Leverkusen was the better team and won with an early goal and two late goals after Crailsheim equalized in between.

Next weekend there is time to recover for the players in Germany due to an off weekend for an ODP tournament. Most have to play on Easter twice though

In Italy ASD Torres won at Chiasiellis 3-0 and kept the lead in the standings. Further details are not known yet.

Midweek Action

While Essen's game in Hamburg was cancelled and rescheduled again, Tennis Borussia Berlin had to host UEFA Cup Winner FCR Duisburg. With Kat Tarr in the starting defence and Amanda Feigt still being out due to injury, the team from the German capital could defend a scoreless draw in the first half. In the second they were without chance against the top ranked team and lost the game 0-5.

In Italy ASD Torres defeated Olympique Lyonnais 1-0 in the second leg of the Champions League quarter  final. After the 0-3 loss in the first leg in France it was not enough to advance. Selenia Iacchelli remained on the bench in this game. There now will be an all German semifinal between Turbine Potsdam and FCR Duisburg, and an all French semifinale between Olympique Lyonnais and HSC Montpellier - which automatically means that the final in Madrid will be played between a German and a French team.
